As the wrath of the Tsunami recently showed, disaster in the marine environment can attain terrifying dimensions.
Be it a man-made marine disaster or a natural one, preparedness is the key to disaster management.
The objective of the Seminar on Marine Disaster: Impacts, Lessons, Remedies, held on 17 February, 2005, was to take stock of the situation from the point of view of geologists, meteorologists, biologists, oceanographers, environmentalists, geographers and anthropologists in order to rectify the lapses in our disaster mitigation and management system.
The seminar took a holistic approach to the problem and outlined remedial measures like installation of warning system, GIS-based mapped land use, construction of earthquake-resistant structures and use of IT-supported communication system and mock trials for preparedness.
